McCartan to receive personal hearing

2003 Ulster Football Championship - Final

According to media reports Gregory McCartan will miss Sunday's Ulster football final replay after his appeal against a four-week ban was thrown out by the GAC. The experienced Down midfielder attended a personal hearing with GAC members at Croke Park on Wednesday night, July 16.

McCartan was appealing against his red card in last Sunday's drawn Ulster final against Tyrone in the hope that he would be cleared to play this weekend.

However, the GAC upheld referee Aidan Mangan's decision to send off the midfielder. McCartan was dismissed just before half-time after he threw the ball at Brian McGuigan in retaliation for being tripped by the Tyrone player. The decision means that McCartan could miss up to three championship matches, including a possible All-Ireland qualifier against Donegal and an All-Ireland quarter-final.
