McGrath
warns supporters to be patient - 29/01/03
Pete McGrath one of the most successful
managers in the history of Down GAA and Gaelic Football
has asked Down supporters to be patient as his successor
Paddy O'Rourke strives for success.
McGrath who guided Down to two All Ireland
in the 90's is adamant that it will take time to rebuild
Down football to its former gorly. McGrath stated that "It
will take a couple of years for Paddy's work to reap its
rewards, partly because there isn't quite the same sort
of talent on the ground in Down right now as there was 10
or 15 years ago".
McGrath believes new county boss Paddy
O'Rourke has enthusiasm for football in bucket-fulls: "Paddy
realises that there's a lot of hard work ahead but he was
a very committed and enthusiastic player and I'm sure he'll
bring both of those qualities and much more besides to the
job of being the manager of the Down senior football team".
"I think he was the natural choice for the job and I'm sure
he'll get the best out of the players that he will have
at his disposal".
"But Paddy has got good men alongside
him in Greg Blayney, P. J. McGee and Johnny Comiskey, all
very good people, and that will be of enormous benefit to
him in trying to work the oracle" stated McGrath.
