Monaghan's Corey ruled out for Down Game - 28/01/03

Monaghan's hopes of reaching the Ulster SFC semi-finals have been hit by a shock two month ban imposed on 20-year-old right back, Vincent Corey, for allegedly bringing the game into disrepute. He was banned by the Ulster Council on Wednesday night after a disciplinary investigation into incidents that followed last month's controversial Ulster U21 final defeat by Tyrone.

Corey is now ruled out of Monaghan's quarter-final clash against Down at Casement Park on June 8. He would also miss the provincial semi-final on June 22, were Monaghan to qualify, pending any possible appeal by the player. The U21 final on April 12 ended in heated debate after a contested late penalty award decided the game.

Corey's twin brother, Martin, who didn't play in that game due to injury, was also banned for two months arising from the allegedly after match incidents. As the young Clontibret defender played in the famous preliminary round giant-killing of All-Ireland champions Armagh, the suspension will date not from the U21 final but from May 11, the date of the Armagh game.

Were Colm Coyle's side to build on that success, defeat Down and progress past either Fermanagh or Donegal, Corey would not be eligible for selection until the week prior to the Ulster final on July 13. It is understood that he is considering whether or not to lodge a personal appeal to the Ulster Council over the severity of the ban. Were he to do so, this would be required to be forwarded to the authorities within the next three days. Monaghan's County Board were last night not prepared to make an official statement on the matter until the player decides if he will appeal the suspension or not.

Sean McKenna, the county's PRO, did however say: "No nicer two lads could you meet. They are as decent as the day is long and what's happened is very hard on them and their family. "However, at this point we would not wish to make an official statement about the suspension as it is as yet undecided whether Vincent will make an appeal."
