A dramatic brace of injury-time points
by Sligo's Mark Brehony earned Sligo an unlikely win
over Down in their Allianz NFL Division 1B clash at
Newry on Sunday, February 16th. This was Sligo's first
points in Division 1B.
The home side were a point in the ascendancy
as the game entered injury-time. Indeed Sligo were down
to 14 men at that stage as Paul Durcan had received
his marching orders midway through the second half.
 Down
boss Paddy O'Rourke must have been confident, but Sligo
engineered a great escape. Eamonn O'Hara won possession
at midfield and proceeded downfield before passing to
Brehony who levelled the game. Moments later O'Hara
again set up Brehony for his fifth point of the day
and the Yeats men found themselves in front. It was
to be the last score of the match and a devastating
result for a young and eager Down side. Down squandered
plenty of chances particularly in the final 15 minutes.
Down opened with two points from Michael
Walsh and one from Ronan Murtagh. Sligo struck for a
goal from Sean Davey after ten minutes. Sligo followed
this up with two points before Michael Walsh replied
for Down.
Down raised thier game, and took the
lead in the 27th minute when Benny Coulter finished
off a good move involving Liam Doyle. It was an inspiring
goal and they led 1-5 to 1-4 at half-time.
 The
second half was tit-for-tat stuff with points being
exchanged in the third quarter before Down moved into
a two point lead through Doyle and Shane Ward.
Sligo, despite losing Durcan, fought
back to level through Kieran O'Neill and Brehony then
became the hero with a last-minute point from a free.
