Oak Leaf up to Down Challenge - 20/01/03

Taken From the Irish News - By Matt Fitzpatrick

A strong Derry side proved far superior to Down in this high grade senior football challenge game in Cherryvale on Saturday, emerging by 2-11 to 0-7.

Derry were always superior. They were strong in defence where Kevin Doherty, Kevin McCloy and Paul McFlynn dominated. Enda Muldoon and James Conway shaded midfield over Colm McCrickard and John Fegan. The Derry attack moved with precision and power with Paddy Bradley, Ronan Rocks and Gavin Diamond impressive.

Derry attacked from the start and were rewarded with a fortunate goal from Paddy Bradley whose shot deceived the Down keeper. James Conway, Francis Lagan, Darren Conway and Gavin Diamond all pointed. Down replied with two points from Ronan Sexton and one each from Dan Gordon and Colm McCrickard. Derry led by 1-6 to 0-4 at half time.

Enda Muldoon increased the Derry lead with a point early in the second half. A Gavin Diamond goal from a penalty after eight minutes followed by a minute later saw Derry well in control.

Down came back with two Ronan Sexton points and one from Shane Ward but despite a lot of possession they wasted many chances. In the final 10 minutes Derry came back with three points for an impressive win.
