Down
play Fermanagh in Opening National League Game - 30/01/03
Down senior footballers will be hoping
to get their Allianz National Football League campaign off
to a winning start against Fermanagh in Brewster Park, Enniskillen
on Sunday 2nd February. This will be Paddy O'Rourke's first
real competitive test.
A year ago, in the corresponding fixture
played at Ballykinler, Down made an exciting start to the
competition but they flattered only to deceive. That win
in Ballykinler was one of only two in the competition, in
fact, it was one of only two wins in competitive football
for Down last year.
The former All-Ireland winning captain,
has had a few worries leading up to the game with star defender,
Brian Burns being injured and with a few challenge games
not going in Down's favour. Down were also beaten recently
be a second string Armagh team in the Dr McKenna Cup. This
could be the 'wake up' call which a few of the Down players
needed.
Since the defeat in the McKenna Cup there
has been a major improvement in Down's displays in challenge
game with wins over Wicklow and Louth in the last two weeks.
Fermanagh manager Corrigan will have an
up to date “fact file” on the Down management and players.
He and O’Rourke worked together last year with Monaghan
Club side Castleblaney in the Ulster Club Championship.
Corrigan will also know alot of the players through Schools
Competitions.
Paddy O'Rourke will be hoping that he has
his squad motivated for the opening game and that Down's
young squad will have the talent to over come Fermanagh.
One thing for sure Down will travel to Enniskillen on Sunday
prepared to battle for the important opening league points.
Could there be an upset on the way!
