Down to take each challenge as it comes - 16/01/03

Down get back to bussiness tonight after Sunday's McKenna Cup loss to Armagh when they take on University of Jordanstown in a friendly at Burren. This game will be followed by a home game with Louth on Sunday, with the venue yet to be decided.

Further games will follow in the weeks ahead, as O’Rourke seeks to instil some sharpness in his side, ahead of the upcoming National League campaign, where Down will compete in NFL Division 1B. Down will play Fermanagh (away) in the opening game of the 2003 NFL on Sunday the 2nd February, this will be followed by two home games against Mayo and Sligo, and after that come clashes with Laois, Cavan, Kildare and Meath.

The games will come thick and fast when the league starts, and Down will be hoping to show that they are good enough to compete with the top teams in the country. O'Rourke is hoping that he can keep a reasonably settled team, and retain Down's place in the division for next year.”

Once the league campaign grinds to a sudden halt, O’Rourke’s panel will lessen from 36 to 30 players before the Championship begins in June. With Down awaiting the winners of Armagh and Monaghan, preparation is of paramount importance. O’Rourke though, will have his men’s feet firmly grounded, anticipating the tasks in hand:

For the moment however Down will be taking each challenge as it comes, but with hard work and commitment, there hopefully will be good days ahead for this Down team.”
