Dr McKenna Cup
Down 0-13 Armagh 2-05 @ Newry, Sunday 18th Jan 2003

DOWN qualified for a Dr McKenna Cup semi-final date with Donegal with an impressive victory over a skeleton Armagh side in Newry yesterday.

Armagh fielded just three of their All-Ireland winning team and they looked to be heading for a heavy defeat when they trailed by 0-13 to 1-2 with just seven minutes left.

They hadn't scored in the second half, but suddenly they cut loose, scoring 1-3 in a late fightback, with Stephen Kernan - son of manager Joe - grabbing his second goal of the game.

The Down forwards shot 14 wides during the game and also squandered three clear goal chances, but nevertheless they still picked off some great points in the first half as Liam Doyle, Colin McCrickard and Benny Coulter fired them into a 0-8 to 1-2 lead at half-time. The Armagh goal came from a Kernan penalty.
