A depleted Down side powered past holders
Monaghan in the Dr McKenna Cup game in St Tiernach's
Park, Clones yesterday.
Down manager Paddy O'Rourke gave senior
debuts to eight players and must have been pleased with
the commitment and courage shown by the whole side.
A crowd of over 1,000 witnessed a dour
struggle as each side sought supremacy.
Monaghan opened well and led by 1-2
to no score after six minutes. Paul Finlay pointed two
frees and Damien Freeman finished a neat Monaghan move
with a goal.
However, the Farney men did not score
again until the sixth minute of the second half and
in between times Down, despite losing midfielder Alan
Molloy and full forward Peter Turley both injured, took
some brilliant long-range points and were level at half
time.
Three points by Liam Doyle, the best
player on the field, and one each from Collie McCrickard
and Danny Hughes left the half time score; Monaghan
1-2 Down 0-5.
Down attacked strongly on the resumption
but shot four wides before Monaghan came back with three
points to take the lead.
Dessie Mone finished a good move with
a point while Paul Finlay pointed two frees to give
Monaghan a three point lead.
But those were their last scores. Down
took control in the final 10 minutes and points from
McCrickard, a brilliant long range effort, and Danny
Hughes and Benny Coulter had the sides level with five
minutes remaining.
In a strong Down attack McCrickard,
with another long-range effort, sent over the winning
score.
Down finished with fourteen players
after corner back Joe Doran received two yellow cards.
