Dougherty manager of the successful 1999 All Ireland Minor
Champions and the outgoing U-21 manager has agreed to take
charge of the Down under-21 football team for another season.
This is good news all round for football in the Mourne county
and puts to rest the controversy surrounding his sacking
by the county management committee, and subsequent reinstatement
by the county committee.
Gerry himself feels it will be a difficult
year ahead, giving that the county is entering a new era,
but he is confident there is plenty of talent in the county
at present to make a worthwhile challenge on the provincial
under-21 title. Now all he and his management team need
is plenty of goodwill and co-operation by the clubs and
players of the county in their quest to bring under-21 football
glory to the Mourne county.
