The GAC has pulled the plug on this season's Hastings Cup under 21 football competition, hoganstand.com can exclusively reveal. Having been granted a reprieve last year, the competition has been wiped off the GAA calendar for 2003 due to a clash with the Sigerson Cup and other third level competitions. Run under the auspices of the Longford county board, the Hastings Cup had become an important part of preparations for many counties competing in the under 21 championship.

This year's competition was to be the biggest yet with 25 counties - including team like Down, Armagh, Tyrone and Cork - taking part. Originally, the Hastings Cup was made up of teams from the midlands area, but had grown to the extent that teams from all four provinces were represented.

The first round of games were scheduled to take place on Saturday week, December 21, but frustrated under 21 managers must now look elsewhere for games ahead of the commencement of the championship in March.
