School wins Annual INTO 7 a side Competition - 26/02/03
Taken from the Down Recorder
THE annual INTO 7 a-side primary schools boys' football
competition was held in Newcastle, last Wednesday in
splendid sunshine
and won by St Dallan's PS Warrenpoint.
It proved to be a feast of football
with the skills and sportsmanship of all competing matching
the excellent conditions. Eight teams had qualified
for these finals and the results of the preliminary
matches were as follows:
Section A -
Mayobridge 4-7 Drumaness 1-0,
Hilltown 3-2 Downpatrick 4-1,
Downpatrick 6-5 Drumaness 3-2,
Hilltown 6-1 Mayobridge 6-5,
Drumaness 1-1 Hilltown 3-6,
Mayobridge 5-3 Downpatrick 1-2.
Section B -
Warrenpoint 5-5 Aughlisnafin 3-2,
Carrick 2-0 Ardglass 1-0,
Carrick 3-0 Warrenpoint 3-2,
Aughlisnafin 1-1 Carrick 5-4,
Warrenpoint 5-3 Ardglass 0-1.
The two unbeaten section winners, holders
St. Patrick's, Mayobridge, and St. Dallan's, Warrenpoint,
deservedly qualified for the final. Both these teams
had displayed all the skills and sportsmanship that
is associated with the game on their way to the final.
Mayobridge had the upper hand in the
early exchanges but by half time St. Dallan's had drawn
level. The second half was equally entertaining, but
was marred by an injury to the Mayobridge goalkeeper
as he fearlessly left his line to prevent a certain
goal and collided with an opposing forward.
Both players required attention, but
the goalkeeper unfortunately was unable to continue.
The score at full time was 2-2 apiece.
The loss of the goalkeeper seemed to
unsettle Mayobridge and St. Dallan's had all the opportunities
in the first half, but had only one point to show for
their advantage. Into the second half and both teams
played with great enthusiasm. With 30 seconds to go,
Mayobridge appeared to have it all wrapped up with an
excellent goal.
The game was decided in the dying seconds
by a well taken goal by the St. Dallan's captain, Ross
McGarry. Final score: St. Dallan's, Warrenpoint, 3-3
St. Patrick's, Mayobridge 3-2.
At the presentation ceremony, Mr Pat
Watterson, chairman of Cumann na mBunscol an Duin, congratulated
all the participants for the efforts and had particular
congratulations to the pupils of St. Dallan's PS, Warrenpoint,
on winning the first football trophy for their school.
Bryansford GAC were thanked for the use of their facilities.
