Down men lead Queen's to Sigerson Weekend - 20/02/04

Sigerson Cup: Queen's University Belfast 1-10 St Mary's University 1-09

Queen's Semi final with UCD will take place on Friday at 2.30 at Sarsfields

The host of this year's Sigerson Cup final will not be appearing in the last four of the competition as St Mary's were denied that accolade by neighbour's Queen's at the Dub on February 18th.

A storming second half display by QUB earned them the right to meet UCD in the semi-finals, next weekend, much to the dismay of St Mary's who are hosting Sigerson Cup weekend this year. In total Down had six players in Queen's starting line up - Daniel McCartan in defence and five forward's Aidan Carr, John Clarke, Karl Oakes; John Turley, and Aidan Fagan, while two of the sub's that came on for Queen's were also Down men - while the Queen's team is managed by non other a Down Man - James McCartan.

St Mary's opened the scoring when Mark and David Harte pointed before Sean Kelly replied for Queen's. The Ranch squandered a number of glorious scoring chances in the opening quarter and should have led by more than 0-4 to 0-3.

Worse was to come for them as Queens scored a goal after Aidan Fagan latched on to a long ball by John Clarke and finished to the St Mary's net.

Harte kick three frees for St Mary's to put his side in front again and Ronan Clarke added another to leave the half time score 0-8 to 1-3 in the travelling team's favour.

Billy Joe Padden narrowed the gap at the start of the second half when he kicked a point, but St Mary's responded the best way possible by rattling the Queen's net after Aidan McCarron scored.

The home side had scores from Clarke and Karl Oakes to narrow the gap between the sides, while Harte replied for St Mary's. Queens then made an inspired double substition and both McCartan and Donagh scored with almost their first touch of the ball, after Aidan Carr had fired over.

The game was heading for injury time when Padden became his side's hero and he kicked the winning point to send Queen's through to the penultimate stage of the competition.
