The finals of the Annual Girls Indoor Football
was held in Bryansford Sports Hall on Thursday
27 January. Following a highly competitive qualifying
competition, Convent of Mercy Downpatrick, St.
Mary’s Kircubbin, St. Patrick’s
Mayobridge and St. Mary’s Newcastle met
to decide the Down champions for 2005. The first
game paired Convent of Mercy Downpatrick with
local representatives St. Mary’s Newcastle
and this proved to be a thrilling encounter.
Downpatrick opened the scoring with a well taken
goal from Bria Cunningham but points from Amy
Carlin and Aimee O’Higgins brought Newcastle
back into contention. Both sides exchanged scores
before Jessica Madine edged Downpatrick ahead
with a goal. Aimee O’Higgins then volleyed
the ball past the Downpatrick keeper and the
great revival was on. Two unanswered scores
from the Newcastle team from Aiomee O’Higgis
and Megan Brannigan left the sides level at
the final whistle.
Score: Downpatrick 2-2 Newcastle 1-5.

St. Patrick’s Mayobridge,
the defending champions, met St. Mary’s
Kircubbin in the second game and this was a tense
struggle between the larger team from the Ards
Peninsula and the highly motived Mayobridge team
ably supported by Michael Walsh, Down’s
county player. Kircubbin opened the score with
a point and indeed they never relinquished this
lead throughout the game. Although it was an end
to end contest, Kircubbin made the most of their
chances and a goals from Laura Hughes seem to
demoralise the smaller Mayobridge outfit. Goalkeeper
Sarah Quinn and sharp shooting Laura Hughes were
best for Kircubbin while Harly Linden, Jade Hughes
and Melissa Bradley competed well for Mayobridge.
Score: Kircubbin 1-7 Mayobridge 0-4
Downpatrick and Mayobridge were
next on the stage and once again the result was
in doubt until the final whistle. Convent of Mercy
opened the scoring with a superb goal from Bria
Cunningham but after hectic exchanges in the middle,
Mayobridge replied with two points from Harly
Linden and Melissa Bradly. The efforts of Jessica
Madine, Adair Trainor and Bria Cunningham ensured
that Downpatrick were in contention until the
final whistle but a goal and a point from Harly
Linden won the game for St. Patrick’s Mayobridge
Score: Mayobridge 1-4 Downpatrick 1-3
The game between Kircubbin and
Newcastle was of vital importance for both teams,
the keenest of the encounters and the low scoring
nature of the game suggested that both teams realised
this. St. Mary’s Newcastle got off to a
brilliant start with Caoimhe McKay scoring a goal
but Sarah Quinn in the Kircubbin goalkeeper made
amends by preventing both points and goals for
the remainder of the game. Up front for Kircubbin,
Laura Hughes was still registering scores and
ensured that her team was victorious.
Score: Kircubbin 1-3 Newcastle 1-0
Mayobridge were the next opponents
for the local girls, St. Mary’s Girls’
Newcastle and indeed Newcastle needed to win to
have any hope of getting a medal. They began in
confident form with a point from Aimee O’Higgins
but this was immediately cancelled out by an opportunist
goal from Sheryl McNamee. Further points from
Harly Linden and Melissa Bradley increased their
lead. Aimee O’Higgins led the Newcastle
surge with a well taken goal but the local girls
couldn’t reduce the deficit and were beaten
by the narrowest of margins.
Score: Mayobridge 1-2 Newcastle 1-1
Going into the final game, St. Mary’s Kircubbin
were assured of top spot in the competition but
a victory for the Convent of Mercy would leave
them tying with Mayobridge in second place. Kircubbin
opened the scoring with a point but Downpatrick
in their first attack registered a goal thanks
to the efforts of Jane McStravick. It was frentic
football with both sides having the ascendancy,
Bria Cunningham and Naoimh McMahon have points
for Downpatrick while Kircubbin replied with two
goals and a point. A futher goal and a point from
Naoimh McMahon suggested that Downpatrick might
overcome Kircubbin but further scores from Laura
Hughes made certain of victory for the new county
champions – Kircubbin.
After the final game, Mr Gerry
Reilly, Cumann na mBunscol an Duin expressed his
