Passing of Down president - 03/03/03

Gaels throughout Down and further afield were saddened to learn of the sudden death of Down GAA president TP Murphy at his home on Sunday morning, March 2.

TP a Newry Shamrocks man give more than six decades of service to the GAA as a player, administrator, and advisor. TP won an All Ireland Colleges Inter provincial title in 1942. Four decades later he was elected as a Trustee of the GAA, having already proven his worth as Secretary of Down from 1965 until 1988. He became President of the GAA in Down in 1990. Just this year TP was awarded the 2002 Bass/Ulster GAA Writers awards for Services to the GAA.

A minute's silence was observed as a mark of respect before the Down-Laois National Football League clash at Portlaoise on Sunday. His funeral will take place on Tuesday, March 4, after 11.00 a.m. Mass in Newry.
