Attical win Down Golf Championship

The first ever all-county Golf Championship for Down GAA Clubs, was hosted by Club Down at Kilkeel on 17th September, and was won by Attical. On the same day that the Club’s footballers had a convincing win in the Intermediate Football Championship semi-finals, the four-ball of Desi Boden, Dominic Murphy, Vincent Boden and Arnold Mackey emerged ahead of a highly competitive field, on a winning score of 98 points, to claim the Sean O’Neill Cup.

Played in superb sunshine conditions, 32 teams took to the course at 2 pm for a “shotgun” start, with Sean O’Neill himself as a “guest” on the Bredagh team. With all players wearing the special souvenir golf shirts in their respective club colours, donated by sponsors Granco Trucks, this made for a very colourful occasion.

A very strong challenge to Attical came from the Saval team of Peter Mc Sherry, Tommy Redmond, Paul Digney and Dessie Sloan on 97 points, their better back nine pipping the Burren four of Vincent Mc Govern , Brian Laverty, Rory Mussen and Paul Fegan. Veronica Mc Greevy was the only lady in the prizes as she an her Glassdruman colleagues of Martin O’neill, Damian Grant and Tommy Madden took 4th place on 95 points while the final prize went to Loughinisland’s representatives, Gerard Martin, and Ed, James and Michael Baggley.

The Invitation Prize for guest teams went to the Kilkeel Golf Club quartet of Michael Fegan, Michael Fegan Jnr., Sean Mc Veigh and Ciaran Fegan, who also returned a card on 98 points.

There was a wonderful atmosphere in the Clubhouse for the presentations and the evening entertainment, where Club Vice-Captain Michael Fagan deputised for Paul Mc Kibbin, Captain, who was absent due to his duties with the Kilkeel golf team in the Jimmy Bruen Shield.

Michael welcomed Club Down and the participating teams and thanked them for choosing Kilkeel Golf Club. He commended the efficient conduct of the tournament and assured Club Down of a welcome back next year.

Chairman of Club Down, Sean O’Neill, thanked all who had supported the event including the many hole and prize sponsors. He presented a special limited edition framed montage of Down’s 5 All-Irelands to Patrick Grant, of Granco Trucks, as a token of thanks for their most generous sponsorship of the event.

Issued on behalf of Club Down by Sean Magee (Co-Ordinator)
