Cumann na mBunscol an Duin held the
finals of the Annual INTO Girls’ Football competition at Annsborough on Thursday
21 April. Four teams qualified for the final viz. St. Mary’s Newcastle, St.
Michael’s Belfast, St. Patrick’s Saul and St. Patrick’s Mayobridge. In the
opening game St. Mary’s Newcastle proved too strong for the St. Michael’s girls
who were making their first appearance in the competition. St. Patrick’s
Mayobridge then accounted for both St. Michael’s and St. Patrick’s Saul in quick
succession. The Newcastle girls were expected to overcome their counterparts
from Saul in the next match. This proved to be an epic struggle with the Saul
girls winning by the narrowest of margins. In the final match against Mayobridge,
St. Mary’s Newcastle got off to a great start with a goal and an upset looked on
the cards, however the more skilful and energetic Mayobridge team were well
ahead at the final whistle. The Mayobridge team were well served by Jennifer
Quinn and Sheryl McNamee in defence while Mickey Linden’s niece Harley Linden,
Jade Hughes and Melissa Bradley were lethal in attack scoring a total of 6-15
in their three games.
