The initial rounds of the U-14 ‘B’ hurling championship
have resulted in a final meeting between one of Down’s oldest hurling clubs –
Liatroim- and one of the newest – Bredagh. In the initial round, Liatroim had a
convincing win over Carryduff before going on to defeat Warrenpoint in the
County Semi final. Warrenpoint had been South Down’s representatives in the Ards
league but it was the strength and power of the Fontenoy team, backboned by
Robert Nixon and Ryan Mc Aleenan, which saw them run out 7-1 to 4-1 winners.
Bredagh meanwhile met Castlewellan in their semi final and the Belfast boys
emerged victorious. Bredagh midfielders Emmett Costello and Donal Hughes played
some stylish hurling and between them contributed 1-7 with Niall Irwin also
bagging two goals.
It should be an intriguing battle in a few weeks time when
the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ clash. Meanwhile the remaining u-14 teams battle it out
for the Shield final, the semi finals of which are scheduled for Saturday 10
September. These semis see Carryduff play Castlewellan with the winners awaiting
the outcome of the other semi final between Ballyvarley and Warrenpoint.
