St
John’s GAA Club in Drumnaquoile will be the setting
this Friday night for a Celebration of Scór in
County Down.
Despite the fact that ‘the
cupboard is bare’ in that we in Down have neither
All-Ireland or Ulster titles in senior Scór this
year, and just the two Scór na nÓg Ulster titles,
both won by Claire Rooney of Mayobridge, we
have been the most successful county in Ulster in
Scór promotion as many more clubs here are taking
part in competitions here than any other county in
Ulster, or comparatively most other counties in
Ireland.
Leitrim (county) holds a unique
record in that they get almost 100% support from
their clubs when Scór time comes around, and this
year in Down 29 clubs took part in Senior Scór with
a similar number competing in Scór na nÓg
Friday night’s celebration will
be an informal get-together with musicians, dancers,
singers and reciters all invited to do their party
piece or pieces. Any Novelty acts willing to
reprise their past performances would be most
welcome. There are no adjudicators present except
those who might come along to join in the fun, and
no adjudication sheets to be distributed at the end
of the night. It will also be a chance to meet
socially with those individuals from the other clubs
and talk about the old times, the good times, the
successes and the disappointments.
Whether your club took part in
Scór or not, you’ll be made very welcome by the Down
Scór committee.
The proceedings get underway from
9.00pm onwards and the County Board, with the
cooperation of the St John’s Club have arranged for
tea and refreshments for everyone present.
In the All-Ireland Senior Scór
finals in Killarney at the weekend, four titles came
to Ulster; Tyrone won both Ceili Dancing and Solo
Singing, Armagh won Instrumental Music and the
Recitation was won by Cavan.
