DOWN CAMGOIE STEER TOWARDS THE FUTURE

CAMOGIE NEWS

Sunday 26 November in Castlewellen GAA Club rooms saw the handover of office from Mr Ben Fox to Mrs Maureen O’Higgins as Chairperson. For Ben Fox it was an end to an era in  which he saw Down Juniors and Minors going through to All Ireland Finals as well as Club successes such as Ballycran's All-Ireland success at Feile in June 06 and Liatroim Fontenoy’s winning the All Ireland McBride Cup in November 04 & 05.

Ben was an excellent ambassador for Down Camogie and will be remembered for his professionalism in which he carried out his duties as Chair. Ben will be still involved in the Executive Committee and his new role will be Assistant Treasurer.

New Chairperson Maureen O’Higgins has recently completed 5 years as Chairperson of Liatroim GAC and currently sits on the Down GAC Planning & Development Committee under the Chairmanship of Dan McCartan. Maureen’s involvement in the GAC has provided her with invaluable experience which will assist her in her new role.

Maureen’s main objective will be to help Clubs to raise the profile of Camogie in Down and increase participation in the game.

Down’s Camogie Board’s planned launch their new 3 year Strategic Plan will steer clubs towards increased participation, quality and professionalism. Main priorities in Down Camogie currently are Coaching, Schools, Referees, Administration and PR/Marketing. All Clubs will have to be more accountable and accept more responsibility for the current affairs of Camogie in Down.

Maureen is aware that the current role will be a challenge however, she will endeavour to fulfil her duties through the assistance of a very capable Executive Committee and with the support of the Clubs in Down and the GAA.

One of their first roles will be to visit all Clubs to examine the state of Camogie in each Club and provide support where necessary. Maureen is very much in favour of integration ad looks forward to the amalgamation of all GAA sports.

Maureen is currently recovering from a recent car accident and will not take up her duties until the New Year.
