Full House at Down Scor Final

Seventeen County Down GAA clubs were represented on stage at the finals of this years Scór Sinnsear finals held in Dundrum on Sunday night last, where in a packed Saint Aquinas Hall, four full hours of top quality entertainment was enjoyed by the appreciative audience.

After the adjudicators had had deliberated, after all the quiz questions had been answered, four clubs shared the honours and now go on to represent the County in the Ulster semi final in Slaughtneil Co Derry on Saturday night next.

Pride of place goes to Clonduff and Saul with three titles each, while Mayobridge and Carryduff share the last two.

In the very competitive Ceili Dancing competition, Saul with the ‘Trip to the Cottage’ reigned supreme over Warrenpoint and Clonduff; Gareth McGreevey and Carol Deegan, also from the East Down club won the Recitation and Solo Singing titles respectively.

For Clonduff, the heroes of the night were undoubtedly the Novelty Act players with the talented Downey brothers, Eamon Devlin and Teresa White faceing stiff opposition from Ballykinlar, Teconnought and Rostrevor to claim victory in the end. The other Clonduff winners were the Quiz team and the Football club Set Dancing team.

Mayobridge Instrumental group went on to win the fourteenth senior county title, against strong opposition from Saul, Bredagh and Attical, and in the Ballad Group section, Carryduff overcame highly fancied groups from Saul, Mayobridge and Glassdrumman to retain their 2005 title.

The night itself proved conclusively that the prophets of doom who predicted that ‘”Scór is dead” have got it wrong again. Scór in the county is undergoing a resurgence thanks mainly to hard working committees in the East and South Down areas together with a renewed interest in Scór and Scór na nÓg in the clubs throughout the county.

The standard of entertainment on Sunday night and in the preceding rounds was top class, as was the standard in the Scór na nÓg competitions in the months before Christmas.

As already stated the winners now go forward to the Ulster semi final in Slaughtneil on Saturday with the final already arranged for Threemilehouse Co Monaghan on 25th March.
