Played in a wet & windy Ardglass Down earned a
draw in 59th min of this opening National League game. Waterlogged pitches
forced this game to be moved twice, originaly to be played in Ballyholland it
was changed to Ballycran but with the heavy rain on Saturday night the search
was on for another pitch early on Sunday morning. Although 9 of Clare's points
came from frees they appeared more alert thoughout the game and where sharper on
the ball with some fine displays of skill and determination and Down were lucky
to get a share of the points. The Down defence had a few scary moments when
goalmouth scrambles were eventually cleared. Moya Maginn & Deborah Kelland were
the pick of the Down backs. The midfield pairing of Ciara McGovern & Lorraine
Maginn had the upper hand over Helen McMahon & Deidre Murphy. At half-time Clare
lead by 7 pts (6 Frees) to Cathy Mullholland's 11th minute goal. Down drew level
early in the second half from the hurl of Catherin McGourty 1st a pt then a goal
from a free. Clare's ace free taker's Denise Lynch & Fiona Lafferty looked like
they had the points secured for Clare until Catherine McGourty pointed then
dropped a ball into the square where Angeline Fearon made sure and finished it
into the back of the net.
