Castlewellan are deserving Down MFC title-holders for this
season when they produced a tremendous display of football to defeat a fancied
An Riocht side in the MFC decider at Newcastle on Sunday, 8th of October. The
standard of football in this game was very high, with both sides going all out
for success. In the end the greater composure of the Castlewellan side proved
the difference as they won the game by three points 1-10 to 1-7.
Castlewellan had the advantage of the gale-force wind at their backs in the
opening half, but they still only went in at the break ahead by 1-5 to 1-3.
An Riocht started the second-half in impressive fashion and after 12 minutes
play the sides were level. With six minutes of the game remaining it looked as
if An Riocht were going to take the title when they led by one point. However,
the Castlewellan side showed greater character and no shortage of talent to ’dig
deep’ and go on an win the game by three points.
