One of the powerhouses of Down club football down the years –
Burren are back into a Down SFC final for the first time since 1999 when they
held off a late challenge from Clonduff to record a deserved 1-11 to 0-11
success in what was a tame semi-final clash.
Burren dominated the game for long periods and they seemed to be strolling to a
convincing win until the final ten minutes when Clonduff staged a comeback and
almost caught them at the final whistle.
In a low-key opening half Burren were always in command and were good value for
their 1-11 to 0-6 lead at the break. With the game deep into the third quarter
the winners were ahead by 1-11 to 0-6 and looked on their way to a final place.
However, Clonduff staged a late comeback and scoring five unanswered points they
reduced the leeway to a single goal. Despite Clonduff’s best efforts they
couldn’t get through for a goal that would force a replay, as Burren held out
for a deserved final place.
