Down GAA festival of Handball, Hurling and Camogie for Castlewellan

 

Down’s 35th annual Feile na nGael finals take place from Thursday 19th to Sunday the 22st of April. They are the finale to a wonderful competition through out the month of April for young players of Handball, Hurling and Camogie. 

Saval host the Handball finals on Thursday night with Castlewellan the hosts for the Hurling and Camogie on Friday and Saturday. 

The Primary Schools Competition is held on Friday night for both Camogie and Football.  The evening begins at 6pm for Hurling with the Primary Schools B final between St Malcahy’s PS Castlewellan and Ballyholland PS.  It is followed at 6.30 by the A final between St Mary’s PS Portaferry  and St Mary’s PS Kircubbin. 

The Camogie begins on Pitch 2 and 3 also at 6.  Two semifinals  will be played simultaneously, the first between St Patrick’s PS Hilltown  and St Patrick’s PS Legamaddy and the second between Ballyholland  PS  v  St Patrick’s PS Ballygalget.

With the winners going on to play in the final at 6.30

Following the matches are the skills competitions for primary schools both Hurling and Camogie at 7.30.

Though the U-14 competition starts on Friday night at 6.30 with the skills contest the main competition starts on Saturday.  The day will start with a parade leaving St Malachys   School at 11 am.  Competitors will parade through the town to the GAA field.  The first match will throw in at 12.30 with the Division 1 clash of Portaferry  v  Bredagh  followed at 1.30 pm by Ballycran  v  Ballygalget.  The two winners meet in the Sunday final.      

The Division 2 hurling matches are held in Annsborough at 12.30.  The top 2 in a league between Clonduff, Warrenpoint and Leitrim will meet in the Division  2 final on Sunday.

The U-14 Camogie  Feile begins at also begins at 12-30pm.  It sees the meeting of  Castlewellan and Portaferry, Ballygalget and Ballyholland, An Riocht v Bredagh  and

Ballycran v Clonduff.  The winners will enter the Cup and the loosers the shield.

 

Sunday is Finals day.  It begins at 1.00pm with the Camogie Final (10 mins each half) followed at 1.30pm by the Division 2 Hurling Final (10 mins each half) and finally at 2.30pm the Div 1 Hurling Final (20 mins each half).  The winners of these 3 finals together with the Handball winner will go through to the national finals in Kilkenny later in the year.
