Warrenpoint will be
the hub of underage hurling and camogie
in Down this summer with the launch of a
summer academy for U-8s, U-10s and U-12s
at St Marks School every Saturday
morning from 11 am to 1 pm.
The GAA's hurling
national Hurling Co-ordinater
Tipperary’s Paudie Butler will lead the
official opening ceremony. The training
camp will be run by coaches from the
Warrenpoint club on a weekly basis with
guest coaching slots by Paudie Butler,
former Down Hurling manager John Crossey,
current dual player Gareth Johnston,
Down and Ireland goalkeeper Graham
Clarke and former county selector Paddy
Branniff to name but a few.
Paudie Bulter has the
goal of getting 12 county hurling teams
to be capable of winning the Liam
McCarthy in the next 6 years. He has
welcomed this effort in Down and sees it
as a wonderful way to bring hurling to
youngsters whose clubs do not give them
the opportunity to play the game.
Warrenpoint Hurling Committee Chairman
Laim Boyle said "Warrentpoint is ideally
situated to host this event. Its
surrounding clubs of Rostrevor,
Mayobridge and Burren have no hurling at
their clubs and are with in a 5 minute
drive of Warrenpoint”. The venture is a
reaction to the extensive development
work undertaken in the primary schools.
The first week of the event attracted
nearly 90 people from Kilkeel to South
Armagh.
Anyone that wants to
come and participate is welcome. Some
helmets and sticks are available for
each session but numbers are limited -
so come early or bring your own. |
