DOWN ARE THROUGH TO THE NATIONAL JUNIOR LEAGUE FINALS

The Down Camogs have secured their place in the National Junior League finals on  29 April against Waterford.

Down had met Clare a few weeks ago and the outcome was a draw. When the two sides met on Sunday in Commercials, Rathcoole, both teams were aware that the game was going to be hard and physical.

It was just within 1min of play when the first point was scored by Clare’s Siobhan Lafferty and this was shortly followed by another point for Clare. Down’s Naomi Morgan was fouled and a free was given against Clare. Catherine McGourty from the 45 line secured Downs first point. Catherine then in the 9min also secured the first goal of the match for Down.

Down’s full backs, Moya Maginn, Pauline Green and Grainne O’Higgins played tremously as they constantly fought hard to prevent Clare’s forwards in scoring. Moya Maginn was relentless in clearing away any dangerous balls.

In the 18minute of the game, Emma Keith and another Down player Ciara McGovern, collided. Unfortunately for Emma, she  had to sit out the remainder of the game at the sideline as she sustained an injury and was unable to play. Down’s All Star Mairin McAleenan was brought on and provided Catherine McGourty with the opportunity of scoring yet another goal against Clare.

At the end of the first half Down 2:02  Clare 0:07. Down’s Catherine McGourty provided all of Down’s scores for this first half whilst for Clare’s. Aoife Ryan, Siobhan Lafferty, Fiona Lafferty scored 1 point each and Clare McMahon scored 4points 3 of which were from play.

With only a point between them, the second half saw both sides battling it out for possession. Down made a substitution, bring on Cathy Mulholland for Naomi Morgan. It was in the 42min when Clare’s Corina Roseingrave scored the first point of this second half. This brought the two sides level. Siobhan Laverty then was awarded a free and scored a point. This put Clare ahead but not for long, as Down’s Jenny McHugh scored a point from a free. Both sides were again level. In the 56 min Clare was once again put in the lead with a goal from Clare McMahon but Down’s Katherine McGourty scored another point. With injury time being added Down’s Catriona McCrickard quickly turned caught the ball and passed it to the ever waiting Catherine McGourity, who then slammed the ball into the back of the net.

Final Score:      Down 3:04       Clare 1:09

This was one of the best performances displayed so far by Down but it was Catherine McGourty who was the hero of the day as her goal in extra time, secured Down’s place in the finals against Waterford, 29 April.
