It’s the start of the Ulster Junior
Championship and Down travelled last
Sunday to Breffin Park Cavan. The score
appears to state that the game was a one
sided affair but on Cavans behalf the
team is relatively young and is still
developing. Credit goes to them for
constantly hassling and breaking down
the ball and preventing Down from
scoring even further.
Down played against a strong breeze in
the first half of the game and within
the first minute of play Sara Louise
Carr scored Downs first point.
Ballyholland’s Cathy Mulholland fought
for possession and passed the ball on to
Sara Louise Carr who did a double turn
and obtained a further point for Down.
This was followed by another from
Rosaleen McCann and Down’s Aoiabheann
O’Neill secured Downs lead with a goal.
Down continued to obtained further
scores but in the 29th minute
Majella Smyth scored Cavan’s first point
of the game from a free.
At
half time Down 1:07 Cavan 0:01.
The
first point came from Sara Louise Carr
and this was followed again by anther
from Angelin Fearon. It was in the 42nd
minute when Karen Gribben set up
Fionnuala Carr who followed through and
scored a goal. Kilcoo’s Coleen Grant
then scored Down’s next two point. Cavan
was awarded a free and Maire Bradley
scored Cavan’s second point of the game.
Down’s Cathy Mulholland ended the game
with a goal on the last minute.
