Despite being represented on Saturday
night last in seven of the eight
competitions in the Ulster Scór Sinsear
finals, Glen’s Kerry Kennedy was the
only County Down representative to make
it through to the All –Ireland final in
Killarney on 28th April.
Singing ‘The Flower of Magherally O’,
Kerry easily eclipsed Armagh’s Paudie
McKeever and Fermanagh’s Corina Ferguson
to win through to the final; not so
lucky were the Mayobridge Instrumental
Music group, playing in their eighth
Ulster final in eleven years who were
pipped to the post by last year’s
all-Ireland winners, Mullaghbawn.
It was
second time lucky too for Cavan’s
Michael McGibney, who beat Down’s Eileen
McCusker and Tyrone’s James McGinn with
the poem, ‘Mary Anne,’ written by a
former Bard of Armagh, Pat McGeeney,
father of the more famous Kieran.
Carryduff, in Ballad Group had to
contend with Armagh’s Carrickcruppen,
winners of the All-Ireland two years ago
and the winners on the night, St Enda’s
from Omagh. A duo from Lisnaskea in
Fermanagh won the Novelty Act
competition, beating Clonduff and
Carrickcruppen in the process, but
Carrickcruppen were consoled with a win
in the Set Dancing competition over old
rivals Warrenpoint and Killyclougher.
Cornafean from Cavan won the Quiz once
again, defeating Clonduff and Trillick
from Tyrone in the process.
All in
all, despite the obvious
disappointments, the entertainment was
first class. There was a capacity
audience who appreciated every
competitor. It was superbly run with
County Down man Gareth McGreevy in
charge of proceedings as Fear a Ti.
