It was 6 minutes into the game before
the first point was scored. This came
from a free awarded to Derry by Aileen
Laverty from the 21st line.
This was shortly followed by another
from Derry’s Grainne McGolderick.
Downs first point came in the 10
minute from a free taken by Fionnaula
Carr from 70th line.
Derry’s Sineade Cassidy, retaliated by
scoring 2 consecutive points. It was
at least another 10 minutes before
Down scored again. This too came from
another free awarded to Down, due to a
foul on Cathy Mulholland.
Down’s Goalkeeper Theresa McGowan went
forward to take on a Derry player, but
this misjudgement allowed Derry to
widen their score margin further as
Patricia Murry took full advantage and
slammed a shot to the back of the net.
Derry’s hard play cost them dearly,
with a result of a penalty being
awarded to Down due to a charge upon
Clonduff’s Orla Maggin. Down’s
Catherine McGourty came forward and
sliced the ball across the front of
the mouth of the goal and scoring
Down’s first goal.
Final point of this first half was
scored by Derry. Score Down 1:05 ,
Derry 1:02.
3 points of a difference was all that
was between the 2 teams. In the first
half of the game Derry’s backs
appeared to be constantly in front of
Downs forwards at all time. Both teams
were pushing hard and making use of
every opportunity of their opponents
mistakes. Down’s defence line
throughout the first half fought
continuously against the strong Derry
side with Moya Maginn and Deborah
Kelland endlessly under pressure.
The second half opened with Down
making changes in players positions,
with Rosaleen McCann moving into half
forward and Ciara McGovern moving to
midfield.
Derry also made 3 substitutions with
Edelle Henry, Katrina O’Kane and Paula
Bell coming on.
The first point of the second half
came from the Mourne’s Catherine
McGourty and this was closely followed
by 2 points by Derry. Down fought back
and Catherine McGourty scoring yet
again.
Down brought on their substitution at
this stage, with Catriona McCrickard
on for Cathy Mulholland and
Sara-Louise Carr on for Karen Tinnelly.
This change of players, brought about
a change of play in the Mourne side as
Down appeared to h
The tension could be felt throughout
the Slaughtneil pitch as both sides
fought to get the next score and for
an unfortunate Derry, Down’s
Sara-Louise Carr scored the ever
important goal on the 58 minute. For
the first time since the start of play
the Mourne Camogs and the Ladies from
the Oak Leaf County were level. Down
then took the lead with a point from
Catherine McGourty. With this as
inspiration and going into 5 mins of
extra time due to injury, Down’s
Catriona McCrickard opened their lead
by scoring a goal. This lead was
strengthened by another point from
Catherine McGourty. The final point of
the game came from Derry’s Katie
McAuley on the 65 minute. .
The Down Camogs from the start knew
that they were facing a formidable
force in the Derry side, as this game
for Down, was their toughest yet. Both
teams have to be admired for their
physical stamina and strength as this
game was nothing but exciting and one
of the best performances displayed by
the ladies in red.
