DOWN camogs opened their National
Junior League campaign with a
handsome win over Kildare when the
only heat on the day in Eire Og Park
came from the Down forwards who were
red hot.
The new management team of Jerome
McCrickard and Maureen O’Higgins had
five key players missing, but there
was enough strength in depth in the
panel to give Down a comfortable
victory.
The game was very physical from the
start, with the first point coming
from a Karen Gribben free in the
seventh minute. This was followed by
a point from Mairin McAleenan and
then a goal from Kelly O’Higgins. By
the end of the first half the score
was Down 3-7 Kildare 0-0.
Down made a number of changes in the
second half with Karen Tinnelly
coming on for Aoibheann O’Neill,
Colleen Grant for Rosaleen McCann,
Claire Trainor for Kelly O’Higgins
and Moya Maginn for Claire Quinn.
Even, Down continued to dominate and
it wasn’t until the 42nd minute that
Kildare opened their account with a
goal.
Throughout the game the Mourne side
played as a unit and the teamwork
was obvious to all that was present.
When Kildare player found herself in
possession, she would be quickly
surrounded by a swarm of Red and
Black players, who fought until they
regained possession.
In the last ten minutes of the game,
the Mourne camogs had a lapse in
concentration and Kildare took full
advantage to score four points.
This is only the start of the
National Junior League for Down and
although they played well it is
important to note that Kildare did
not play to the best of their
ability. It will be different
Kildare when the sides next meet
The player of the match accolade
went to Ciara McGovern.
