The Ladies
Football Ulster Championship comes to
life on Saturday 16th June with an
exciting Ulster Semi Final
doubleheader in Breffni Park. The
Down Ladies team face Tyrone in the
first match at 5pm in what should be
an interesting match up. Down have a
number of injury concerns going into
the match with goalkeeper Emma Madine,
Bredagh's Kerrie O'Neill and Michaela
Downey from Clonduff sustaining knocks
in the last few weeks. Despite the
injury worries, the managers have
expressed their satisfaction with the
team's preparation for the big game,
with joint manager Noel Haughey
saying, "the girls have worked
extremely hard since the end of the
National League campaign and are
looking forward to the challenge of
facing Tyrone on Saturday. A win
would be Down's first at Senior
Championship level. It is long
overdue and the team are in the right
frame of mind to achieve it". Down
have a good mixture of youth and
experience in this year's squad with
three of last year's All Ireland
winning U16 team joining the side for
2007: Niamh McGowan (Saval) and
twins Sinead and Orla Fegan (Newry
Shamrocks). They join the more
experienced players such as
Castlewellan's Aine Keary and captain
Eilish McConville (Downpatrick) who
will be aiming to overturn Tyrone's
favourites tag. Armagh face Monaghan
in the second game at 6.30pm.
