Getting over their
defeat to Derry in the Ulster
Hurling League didn’t take long for
Down minor hurlers when they
impressed with a 4-10 to 3-13 draw
away to Offaly. Every player showed
a level of confidence and skill that
had deserted them the previous day.
Rebounding from a defeat is the sign
of a team with great character.
“Very pleased” was Mick Branniff’s
assessment of his teams performance
after the match. A very competent
midfield partnership of Woods and
Keith starred against the much
fancied opposition. Several
defenders impressed as well most
notably Higgins and Ennis. Even the
forward line who appeared lack
luster the previous day hit a total
of 3-6.
Many neutrals would be surprised
that Down led at half time 1-5 to
0-6. Coming up on forty minutes the
scoring rate of both teams
escalated. Ground hurling on the
day was difficult and both teams in
the second half were playing more
direct long ball hurling. In the
full forward line Down always looked
threatening. Very silly mistakes
cost them 2 goals at the back. Even
so Down still looked like they could
go on and win the match.
No doubt this display will give the
team confidence for their encounter
with Antrim on Saturday |
