Camogie: Down and Clare draw

DOWN            V         CLARE
1:07                             0:10

Down travelled to play Clare at Mountbolus in Offaly last Sunday. The Mourne ladies knew that they were going to be but through their paces, as both sides were out to win.

The game had a 2:00pm throw-in and from the moment the game commenced Down were put under pressure. It was ten minutes into the game before the first point was scored by Clare.

Downs full backs and especially their goalie Theresa McGowan battled hard against a strong Clare team. Pressurised constantly throughout this first half, Down’s Theresa McGowan played magnificently. Whilst the rest of her team mates appeared to be finding it hard to settled into the game, Theresa’s experienced was clear to be seen. as Clare forward came at her again and again, this would have rattled many a goalkeeper but not Theresa.

Clare continued to hassle Down but Clonduff’s talented duo Fionnaula Carr and Karen Gribben and Laitroims Roseleen McCann blocked their way causing Clare to rethink their game of play.

It was 28mins of play before Down’s Catherine McGourty scored their first point of the game. This came about when Clare over carried and Down received a free.

At the end of the first half Clare lead by 0:5 to 0:1.

It was clear to be seen that Clare were in front of Down, throughout the first half and the skill that Down had displayed in their  previous games seemed to have had disappeared. Down’s Fionnaula Carr scored the first point of the second half from a free at the 70 mark but Clare retaliated with 4 consecutive points.

Down by 7 points the Mourne Ladies suddenly had a new lease of life and  began to play  hard  and physical

Changes were made with Moya Maginn going on for Ann Morgan and  Orla Maginn on for Naomi Morgan. Further changes were made with Cathy Mulholland going on for Deborah Kelland. Cathy went into midfield with Rosaleen McCann dropping back to halfback and Grainne O’Higgins going in to corner back. These changes had the desired effect as Down now appeared to be in control with Karen Gribben the next two points for Down and then scoring a goal from Jenny McHugh. Down used the remaining of their subs by bringing on Karen Tinnelly and Sara-Louise Carr.

It was great to see that the last two points of the game came from Down’s Orla Maginn and Catherine McGourty who was set up by Sara-Louise Carr.

It might have been the long journey, it might have been that Down met their match but Down should have won that game. If there had been another minute Down would have scored but they simply ran out of time. This was one of the toughest matches Down has played so far this season. Final score Down 1:07 Clare 0:10
