The East Down Scór na
nÓg final was held in St Aquinas Hall Dundrum
on Sunday past 11th November.
With a full compliment of competitors
in all but one of the competitions, patrons and
club supporters alike were treated to four hours
of top class entertainment from the young competitors.
On the day, Castlewellan emerged
as top club, but faced serious competition from
several other clubs taking part.
In Ceili Dancing, Carryduff with
the ‘Trip to the Cottage’ took the
honours with Loughinisland in runner-up position.
In Solo Singing, Castlewellan’s
Orla McCrickard kept up the family tradition when
she won the competition with Loughinisland’s
Daniel McKay in second spot. Orla’s big
sister Ciara won the same competition for the
past three years after finishing in second spot
in 2004.
Castlewellan were also winners of the Instrumental
Music section but Saul gave them a great run for
their money.
It was Castlewellan again in
recitation with Kirsty McAleese with her ‘Three
Grains of Corn’ a worthy winner from the
diminutive Orla Mallon representing Carryduff
in second spot.
In the Ballad Groups, the big battle here was
between Loughinisland with Tommy Sands’
‘Come on Home to County Down’ and
old Ballad Group faithfuls, Saul, who repeated
last year’s success against the same club.
There was loads of entertainment in the Novelty
Act section when Kilcoo’s ‘Crossed
Wires’ pipped it over Saul’s ‘County
Down Angel in Croke Park’
It was all Kilcoo in the Set Dancing when their
Camogie Club’s half set reigned supreme
over the footballers eight hand dance and to end
a perfect evening’s entertainment Loughinisland
retained their East Down title against St John’s
in second place.
