Wiilie Anderson welcomed at Club Down Banquet
The winner of the Spirit of
Breen Morgan Memorial Trophy for 2007 is new
Down captain Dan Gordon. The award is made to
the Down senior footballer who, over the past
season, consistently displayed the courage and
determination that were the hallmarks of the
late Breen Morgan during his playing days. The
trophy was presented to Dan at the 5th annual
Club Down Sports Banquet in the Slieve Donard
Hotel on Friday night.
The guest speaker at the banquet was former
Ireland rugby captain, Willie Anderson, who
received a warm welcome from the 300 guests,
and earned a standing ovation for his candid
and entertaining account of his rugby playing
days and his connections with the local GAA
club in Loup where he lives.
In a keynote address, Down County Chairman Kevin
Bell commended Club Down for their outstanding
contribution to the redevelopment of Park Esler,
both in relation to the funding and the direction
of the project, and singled out Brian Cunningham
and John Moran for thanks for their expertise
and dedication on the project committee. He
expressed the hope that Club Down will continue
to play a central role in the future of the
GAA in Down.
A donation from the banquet to Southern Area
Hospice was presented to Hospice fundraiser
Jimmy Cowan by Club Down Treasurer John Mc Shane.
