This Saturday
8th September @ 3:30, Down non-Ards minor
hurlers travel to Ballyconnell Co. Cavan
to take on Sligo for the All-Ireland Hurling
Championship Trophy.
On Saturday
August 11th decimated by holidays, Gaeltacht
and injuries, a team of 17 made their
way to St Fechin's complex outside Drogheda
for the North East Hurling Blitz to face
teams from Longford, Monaghan, Cavan and
finally Leinster Shield winners, Louth.
On the day Down and Louth won their opening
3 games and so it was fitting that the
final game decided the trophy and the
title.
Despite
winning 2-12 to 0-5 this was by far Down's
toughest game with goalie Colm Mc Cabe
(Newry Shamrocks) pulling off two breathtaking
saves. However with Michael Cunningham
and Paul O'Neil knocking over 4 points
a piece and goals from Paul Mc Aleenan
and Michael Fegan, Down became the first
winners of the Blitz Iomana Shield. The
competition was the brainchild of National
Hurling Development Officer, Paudie Butler
and this Saturday in Ballyconnell sees
the finale where Down meet Sligo.
It is
hoped that a large contingent of supporters
will travel to encourage this young team
and who knows, maybe bring home a National
title.
