Three of the eight Down Scór Sinsear
champions made history for Scór in
making the first ever trip to the Annual Irish
concert which is organised by the Ulster Council
and took place in Downings GAA Centre on July
24th last. A bus filled with competitors supporters
and Scór officials, along with others
who travelled by car left the county on a
sunny Wednesday afternoon, and made a very
successful trip to Donegal to take part in
the annual event.
The first act on the stage on the night was
the Down County champions in Instrumental
music from Glenn, made up of Eugene Sands,
Laurence Guiney, Kerri Kennedy, Karen McCartan,
Michaela McNulty, Susan & Martha Guiney,
who treated the audience to a great variety
of tunes. Other competitors took the stage
from Counties Donegal and Tyrone and then
it was the turn of Christopher Grant from
Annaclone the County champion in Recitation
who treated the audience to his winning recitation
which was recited as Gaeilge. Derry’s
All-Ireland solo singing champion Niamh McGlinchey
from the Lavey GAA club was next on stage,
and the first half was brought to close with
three songs from County Down’s Solo
Singing champion, Kerri Kennedy from Glenn.
Kerri sang three very nice songs all relating
to our County and no one was more proud of
County Downs’s representatives at this
event than former GAA President Mr Paddy McFlynn,
who travels each year to this part of Donegal
to take part in the Irish language course
that is run there on an annual basis.
Naul McCole, Runai Coiste Gaeilge agus Oidreachta
Comhairle Uladh, personally thanked the County
Down competitors and Scór personnel
for making this long journey. Thanks also
were paid to the County Down Gaels from Fergus
Mage, Runaí Coiste Scór Uladh.
As this event drew to a close it was back
on the bus and William our driver headed us
for the Mourne Mountains. With Kerri and Eugene
is full singing voice and a reliable chorus
on board we were soon back in our home county.
A memorable day was had by all and it would
be hoped that this could become an annual
event for some of our Down County Champions
in the future
