With the mens team losing out to Wexford,
Down's footballing hopes for 2008 lie solely
with the ladies team as they face into their
next qualifier game on Saturday 9th August.
While the draw had not taken place at the
time of writing, the mourne girls will be
confident of providing a stern challenge
to whoever they face after a goo performance
against Meath last week.
Last week saw the Down team show their
steel and confidence as both new and experienced
members of the squad stepped up to the plate
for a convincing win. Younger members of
the squad Emma Mulhern and the Fegan twins
from Newry Shamrocks showed no signs of
nerves in their first televised appearance
as they put in tremendous performances alongside
more experienced players such as Jenna Connell,
Lisa Morgan and player of the match Michaela
Downey. The reds will be looking to such
players to extend this run of good form
at the weekend.
While the team still have some injury concerns
over players Sonya McGaw and Niamh Lennon,
they were bolstered this week with the return
of their co-manager Sean O'Hare, who has
returned after a month in Africa on a charity
project and will rejoin Paul McShane on
the sideline on Saturday. Looking forward
to the game he said, "I am delighted
to see how hard the girls have worked in
my absence and that they are geting some
reward for the months of hard work they
have put in throughout the year. Confidence
is high among the squad and we are looking
forward to a hard game on Saturday and if
all goes well, progression to the next round."
