Representing, their Club, their
County and Province, Castlewellan’s young
musicians put on a marvellous performance at
the All-Ireland Scór na nÓg finals
in Athlone on Saturday last, but luck was against
them and they had to settle for second place
in what was a thrilling musical competition.
Orla McCrickard, Emer Walsh and Niall McCrickard
were wonderful ambassadors for their County,
and put it up to the eventual winners from Boherbue
in Cork who were defending the title they won
last year, and though finishing in second spot,
every Down and Ulster supporter in the audience
was proud of them.
Boherbue, representing Munster,
were first on and started off at full blast
playing the ‘New House Jig’, followed
by the ‘Dublin Reel’, and it wasn’t
until Castlewellan came on with ‘Tripping
Down the Lane’ and ‘The Laurel Tree’
and that we thought that a serious challenge
was going to be made to the eventual winners.
Of the eight competitions in
Scór, two went to Ulster. Niamh McGlinchey
from Derry was the deserving winner of the Solo
Singing competition and Glenswilly from Donegal
won the Novelty Act.
