The recent success of the
Down senior footballers in winning the Dr. McKenna
Cup at the expense of Derry in CasementMourn
Park, Belfast last Saturday night has given
the Down supporters new hope that at last their
side have ’turned the corner’ and
they can look forward to better things on the
inter-county scene in the coming season.
After ten years without winning
a senior trophy, hopes are high that to-morrow
night, 2nd of February at Pairc Esler, Newry
they can make a winning start in the NFL Division
Three against the reigning Connacht SF champions,
Sligo.
There should be a big local
attendance present for this league opener, and
they are assured of a good open match between
two sides who like to play fast attractive football.
With the likes of Dan Gordon, Danny Hughes and
Liam Doyle in top form at the present time there
is no reason why the Mourne followers can’t
expect a victory in the opening round. Remember,
a good start to the competition is imperative
if Down are to be in contention for promotion
at the end of the league, but they will have
to be wary of the Sligo challenge on this occasion.
The formbook points to a home
win and hopefully that will be the case. The
match has a 7 p.m. start.
