Markey Cup success for St.
Malachy’s Castlewellan

The Ulster Bank Markey Cup title has gone to
St. Malachy’s School, Castlewellan when
on Wednesday, 20th of February at the Casement
Park, Belfast venue they defeated Holy Trinity,
Cookstown on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-9. This
win bridged an 11 year gap as the Co. Down side
deservedly won their fourth Markey Cup title.
The game played in ideal weather
conditions was interesting right through with
the Castlewellan side having the edge for most
of the hour. They led at the interval by three
points 0-7 to 0-4.
Holy Trinity, Cookstown came
out for the second-half in determined fashion
and more than matched their opponents for most
of the half. Indeed, with the game entering
its final five minutes they reduced the leeway
to four points. However, Castlewellan were not
to be denied on this occasion and they finished
with a goal from corner-forward C. Laverty to
deservedly claim the title with something to
spare in the end.
