Five County
Down GAA Clubs are geared up for this Saturday
night’s big Ulster Scór na nÓg
final in Galbally County Tyrone.
Scór and Scór na nÓg the
winter talent competitions for GAA club members
has been enjoying a glorious revival in the County
in recent years with full houses in all venues.
The competitions in Galbally are due to begin
at 7.30pm and from past experience, we know that
the atmosphere will be electric with representatives
from all nine counties vying for places in the
All-Ireland final in Athlone on 16th February.
In Castlewellan young musicians are practising
hard to recapture the coveted Ulster Instrumental
Music title last won by Mayobridge in 2004 and
in Saul, young singers will be hoping to emulate
the achievements of the St Michael’s group
who won their way to the All-Ireland in the same
year.
Rostrevor are no strangers to an Ulster Scór
stage either with an Ulster title and a number
of final appearances under their belt, and in
nearby Warrenpoint the Set Dancers who recaptured
a Down title after a ten year lapse will be hoping
to make it through to their first all-Ireland
final next month in Athlone.
The young Clanna Banna quiz team of 2004 were
the last County Down quizzers to win an Ulster
title. This year, three young men from the Loughinisland
club will be hoping to achieve Ulster success
and go on to the final, but like all their other
Down Scór na nÓg companions they
know that the competition on Saturday night will
be very tough.
The standard at Scór and Scór na
nÓg in recent years has been very high
and whatever happens we all know that our representatives
will do us proud.
Scór Sinsear, the competitions geared for
adult members are due to begin in four venues
in the county on 8th February, with the County
final fixed for 2nd march
