U15 Development Squad and Coaches
On Tuesday evening last (22nd Jan), Seamroigi
An Iuir was the venue for the presentation evening
for the Down Football Development Squads. The
presentation was organised to coincide with
the McKenna Cup semi-final and what an exciting
night it turned out for these young footballers
of Down and its future.
Eamonn O Hare (Coaching and
Games Development Officer for Down) welcomed the
members of the Under 15, Under 16 and Under 17
football panels, along with their parents and
the coaches from each of the squads.
The players were each presented
with a certificate and specially designed Development
Squad t-shirt acknowledging their participation
in the Development Squad programme which took
place over the summer months.
On behalf of County Board Eamonn
thanked the coaches who helped develop these young
players by offering them some of the experiences
and the demands of an inter-county footballer.
Players were made aware of lifestyle requirements,
training techniques and the self-discipline required
if a player is to succeed at the highest level.
All players were encouraged to bring these best
practices back to their clubs.

The presentation was then followed
by a buffet meal supplied by Courtney’s
and the players and their parents were guests
of Ulster Council at the semi-final to watch their
senior colleagues defeat Cavan in an exciting
game to book a place in the Mc Kenna Cup final.
This presentation evening drew
to a close the season for the Development Squads
and plans are already in place for this year’s
programme. Each squad will follow a precise 8
session programme. Details of the programme are
being finalised at present and will be circulated
to all clubs in the county over the next few weeks.
Clubs and post-primary schools will be asked to
nominate players who are considered to have the
potential of becoming inter-county players. These
players will be trialled and panels selected.
These panels will be taken through the programme
of development thus helping these individuals
become better players.
