GAA
President Nickey Brennan has extended his
deepest sympathies and those of the Association
to the family and friends of Down official,
Michael Cole, who passed away while refereeing
a match.
A statement issued from Croke
Park today read:
"Mr. Cole was refereeing
a Down Senior football league game yesterday
evening when he collapsed and despite the
best efforts of medical staff he passed away.
As well as being a very popular and committed
referee, Mr. Cole also served as a councillor
on Newry and Mourne District Council and was
Mayor for the past year, his term of office
as Mayor ending recently. As Mayor of the
council he welcomed delegates to the Ulster
GAA Convention which was held in Newry earlier
this year.
"Mr. Brennan described
Mr. Cole as a great GAA man who was very committed
to refereeing. His community spirit was further
reflected in his representation of his local
community on the Newry and Mourne District
Council.
