Ladies Gaelic Update - 20 May 2008
On the league front, last Wednesday ’
s games were postponed to facilitate the Down
U-16 ’ s preparation for their Ulster
Final match v Donegal on Friday night. Despite
a tremendous effort the girls were defeated
on a score 5-09 to 0-09.
In the senior league Castlewellan and Bredagh
shared the spoils in a re-fixture last Wednesday
night. O n Saturday evening Bryansford came
tumbling back to earth when a goal hungry
Saval outfit demolished them in Nan Sands
Pairc. The superior firepower of the Newry
girls was the telling factor in this enthralling
match . Annaclone would have expected more
from their trip to Castlewellan given their
recent good form but the town girls were in
no mood to indulge and ran out easy winners
in a very open game to move into top position
. Clonduff picked up maximum points against
Downpatrick who were unable to field.
In the Intermediate league, Ballymartin fell
heavily to a slick Rostrevor outfit who have
strung together some very impressive results
of late. Meanwhile in Kilcoo the magpies were
claiming the scalp of the league leaders Carryduff
running out 12 point winners in a very entertaining
match . This was a massive result for Kilcoo
and as predicted last week a potential banana
skin for the Belfast outfit. In the midweek
game Bright and Kilcoo ended all square in
what turned out to be a fantastic game of
football played in excellent underfoot conditions
in Kilcoo.
In the junior league Shamrocks ran out easy
winners against St. Michaels to maintain the
status quo.
The week ahead:
On Wednesday night a series of big games
are up for decision. Carryduff entertain Rostrevor
in a top of the table clash. A win here for
the reds will see them match Carryduff on
points. Bright will be aiming to defeat Bredagh
and at the same time hoping for a Rostrevor
win as they will leapfrog both teams in to
top spot. On form its likely that both Rostrevor
and Bright will advance. In the other match
Kilcoo entertain Ballymartin. This is the
first meeting of these sides and Kilcoo fresh
from the defeat of Carryduff will be optmistic
of a home win. Ballymartin on the other hand
may have other ideas
Saturday ’ s games, should see wins
for Clonduff , Saval and Bryansford in the
senior league. In the intermediate league,
Rostrevor should pick up maximum points a
gainst Tullylish. Carryduff v Bredagh is the
big game in this division and I expect Carryduff
to get back on track . Loughinisland are improving
with every match and they are capable of making
life difficult for Ballymartin but home advantage
should be enough to see them through. In the
junior league Clonduff and Teconnaught should
pick up the points on offer.
