Clonduff Hurlers are County Junior Champions - 02/10/02

In a very one-sided game Clonduff outplayed Ballygalget in every sector of the field. Clonduff were first to score but through a Sean Curran point, Ballygalget replied after only three minutes with a goal from corner forward Peter McKenna. Clonduff lifted their game and during the first half scored another 10 points and a goal. Clonduff were playing with wind advantage and with a quarter of the game gone Clonduff lead 1 - 06 to 1- 01. The goal coming from John Ward and a string of points from Allistair McGilligan and John Murphy. Just as Clonduff seemed to be settling Ballygalget caught the Clonduff defence naping and verteran full forward Conor Savage got Ballygalgets second goal. Clonduff responded with an excellent long range point from Paul McCusker and a brace each from Sean Curran and Allistair McGilligan to go in at half time leading 1-11 to Ballygalgets 2 - 01.

Clonduff faced a stiff breeze in the second half but it seemed to make little difference to their superiority with them scoreing 2 - 08 to Ballygalget's 0 - 02 with Clonduff's goals coming from supersubs Fionnbarr Murphy and Paudie Matthews. The Ard's team opened up the scoring in the second half but it soon became obvious that the introduction of Paudie Matthews a new dimension had been brought to Clonduff's play. Matthews played with such potential that he has all the hallmarks of a county hurling player, his stick control, his runs through the Ards defence and his intelligent lay-offs were a dream to watch.

Clonduff picked off six unanswered points to run into a 1 - 17 to 2 - 02 lead at the end of the third quarter. They were now in control and they finished the game with a flourish when the two substitutes Matthews and Fionbharr Murphy each found the net. This wasn't a game just about scoring - Shane Boyle, in goals caught 5 or 6 high dropping balls in the second half and cleared his line confidently. Alister McGilligan had a great game at full forward in the first half and moved into the backs for the second half and he and Liam Boyle, ably assisted by the other backs cleaned up nearly everything else that came the way of the Clonduff goal.
