| Down
clubs make piece of hurling history - 10/11/2003
There was a piece of hurling history made last weekend when
in the Antrim Division 1 hurling league semi-finals resulted
in wins for two of the leading Down sides competing in the
competition Portaferry and Ballygalget. This will be the
first time two Down clubs have contested the Antrim Division
1 hurling league final.
Holders Portaferry defeated Ballycran in
the opening semi-final by 1-19 to 0-13. The sides were level
at the interval eight points each, but the Portaferry side
upped their game in the second-half helped by a goal from
Paul Braniff - which proved decisive in the end.
The other semi-final resulted in a win
for the Down county champions, Ballygalget over the beaten
Antrim county finalists, Loughgiel after extra-time. Goals
from Sean Og McFadden and Aiden McCloskey had put the Loughgiel
team in front during normal time, but Ballygalget kept their
composure and with some fine long-range point-scoring and
a goal from county star, Johnny McGrattan they came through
in the end. Final score Ballygalget 1-17, Loughgiel 3-9
- a two points winning margin.
