Death
of Ballycran Hurling Legend - 05/01/03
Taken from Hoganstand.com
It is with deep regret that the Down hurling
fraternity and further afield learned of the death of Martin
O'Flynn, the former Ballycran, Down and Ulster hurling star.
Marty as he was known, was a multi-talented sportsman who
had more than a passing interest in many pursuits.
He was a fine squash player, an accomplished
horseman and had periods playing soccer and gaelic football.
But it was as a distinguished and gifted hurler for club,
county and province that Marty's great talents shone through.
Hurling was his passion. His tall, lean. athletic figure
oozed driven passion and pride, especially when he pulled
on the black and amber jersey of his beloved Ballycran.
It was in the 'seventies that Marty was seen at his best
as Ballycran blazed a winning trail throughout Down and
Ulster.
He achieved one of his greatest ambitions
when he captained his club, Ballycran to the Ulster club
hurling championship title in 1976. His exploits with Down
and Ulster are well documented. He helped Down win promotion
from Division 4 of the N.H.L. to Division 2. After his retirement
he took over management of Ballycran and guided them to
success in the S.H.C. Final in the GAA Centenary Year -
1984.
Marty had countless successes on the hurling
field, representing club, county and province with dignity
and honour. He won a handful of medals, trophies and awards
but his greatest honour was that 1976 Ulster club success.
His sudden death at the age of 47 years of age takes away
a player who was a truly great sportsman especially in the
hurling world. To his family goes deepest sympathy.
