The Under 16 Hurling League got underway on
Friday last with a number of games down for
decision. In Section A, last years Championship
winners Ballycran continued their winning ways
with a well merited victory away to neighbours
Portaferry. In the ‘mainland’ sections,
Bredagh also carried on when they left off last
season against visiting Kilclief. Despite goals
from Kilclief’s Dean Fitzsimons and Chris
Hogan, it was the Belfast side who finished
victorious.
Bredagh’s neighbours, Carryduff suffered
disappointment when Castlewellan were unable
to travel for what would have been Carryduff’s
first game at this level. There were no postponements
in South Down however as Shamrocks travelled
to Hilltown to overcome Clonduff by 4 points.
This match was notable for the scoring exploits
of Paul Sheehan who hit 1-4 for Shamrocks while
Clonduff’s Calum O Hare scored all of
his sides 1-2 total. In the other Section C
match Ballela had a comfortable win over neighbours
Ballyvarley.
The Under 16 league continues next Friday with
the pick of the games being the match between
unbeaten Ballela and Shamrocks. Liatroim and
Warrenpoint both play their first matches against
Bredagh and Ballyvarley respectively while Carryduff
will have a tough debut fixture at Kilclief.
In the Ards, Ballygalget will be trying to lower
Ballycran’s colours.
The Under 14 leagues also commence on Monday
11 April while the Under 12s continue on Saturday.
